Art For your hallway
Hallway wall art is the decor most British homes forget. The corridor everyone walks through and nobody decorates deserves better. The right piece on the right wall turns the corridor from a passage into part of the home, and a thoughtful gallery wall up the stairs is one of the rare decor moves that genuinely lifts a house.
This edit is built for the shapes hallways throw at you: tall thin walls, panoramic stretches above a console table, and the long ascent up a staircase. Originals are by Rebecca Grant. Prints are signed and numbered.

Three formats that suit a hallway
Slim vertical, for a tall thin wall
Portrait paintings on a narrow canvas, or A1 prints in a slim frame, sit beautifully on the kind of narrow wall a hallway often gives you. They draw the eye up rather than across, which makes the ceiling feel higher.
Panoramic landscape, for above a console
A long horizontal piece anchors a console table. Aim for a painting roughly the same width as the table, or a fraction wider. The frame should sit about 20 centimetres above the table top.
A signed set of two or three, for a stair wall
Up a staircase, hanging a single piece is rarely the right answer. A set of two or three signed prints, climbed at an angle to follow the bannister, is. See Gallery Wall Print Sets for sets sized to hang together with consistent margins. The trick is consistent gaps between each piece, usually about 7 centimetres, and a strict rule that the centre of each piece sits roughly 145 centimetres from the stair tread directly below it.
Where to put the largest piece
The single most important spot in any hallway is the wall at the very end, the one you see from the front door. That is where the largest, most finished piece goes. Everything else along the corridor is a step toward that view. Most homes get this the wrong way around: the largest piece sits halfway down a wall and the end wall is left blank.
Light, the hallway-specific problem
Hallways are often the darkest part of the house. Two things help. First, choose paintings with warmer notes (gold, copper, blush) over cool ones, because warm colour reads brighter in low light. Second, fit two simple picture lights above the largest piece. They cost less than people expect and lift the whole hallway at the flick of a switch.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What size art for a narrow hallway wall?
Aim for a painting roughly two thirds the height of the wall, in a portrait orientation. So a 2.4 metre ceiling wants a piece around 90 to 100 centimetres tall. Slim vertical formats draw the eye up rather than across, which makes the ceiling feel higher.
How do I style a gallery wall up the stairs?
Use a set of two or three signed prints climbed at an angle that follows the bannister. Keep consistent gaps between each piece, usually about 7 centimetres, and aim for the centre of each piece to sit roughly 145 centimetres from the stair tread directly below it. Stick to one frame finish and one mat colour.
Where in a hallway should the largest piece go?
On the wall at the very end, the one you see from the front door. That is where the largest, most finished piece belongs. Everything else along the corridor is a step toward that view.
Which print sizes work in a narrow hallway?
Limited edition prints are offered in six sizes. Three rectangular formats follow the standard A series: A1 at 594 by 841 mm, A2 at 420 by 594 mm and A3 at 297 by 420 mm. Three square formats are 420 by 420 mm, 595 by 595 mm and 840 by 840 mm. Originals are unique pieces; sizes vary and current dimensions are available on request from the studio.
Can I commission a panoramic piece for above a console?
Yes. Commissions are open. Visit the commissions page to share your brief and any reference photographs. Lead times depend on size and complexity.
